 ARTIST STATEMENT

My life has been about change: geographical, personal, creative, career, and otherwise. Being in a state of flux—uncertain about what to do but ready to go in a new direction— is second nature to me. But so too is finding stability within uncertainty, and making a home wherever I go. Art helps me do that by grounding me in the present while accepting the inevitability of change. My abstract paintings reflect this tension by combining energetic bursts of emotion and color with swaths of calm and repose.

Weather and climate change are constant hums in the background of my work, informed by the landscapes around my home in the Pioneer Valley—the greens and blues of summer and the icy blues and blacks and whites of winter. I’m fascinated by the constant movement and decay and rebirth of the natural world, while also being deeply concerned about what’s next for our planet. What new direction will we need to go in order to survive?

I work in acrylic and gouache paint, as well as mixed media and collage. You can follow my process on Instagram @wampoline
